Artist story about ‘Art of the National Parks,’ Garnet Canyon in Grand Teton National Park and ‘Into the Clouds’:
Garnet Canyon is a hiking and climbing paradise. It’s the gateway to many routes up the main Teton peaks, including the Grand Teton and the Middle Teton.
The peak disappearing “Into the Clouds” in this painting is actually the Middle Teton. The Grand towers above it out of the frame to the right.
Climbers lucky enough to get a permit can camp either in the sunlit portion of this valley or on the Lower Saddle between the Middle Teton and the Grand.
With the Grand Teton jutting up to 13,770 feet and the Middle Teton right behind it at 12,804 feet, these mountains are a self-contained ecosystem.
Even if the valley floor hasn’t seen a cloud for weeks, it’s possible for the mountains to be blanketed in self-generated clouds. Sometimes, this kind of cloud never ventures beyond the peaks.
In 2013, authors Jean Stern, Susan McGarry, and Terry Lawson Dunn chose this piece as the cover for the “Art of the National Parks: Historic Connections, Contemporary Interpretations” coffee table fine art book.
My gallery, Wilcox Gallery, also hosted the regional launch party for the book with a show featuring many of the contemporary artists in the book.
Since then, several others have also commissioned pieces similar to this unique painting.
This painting utilizes storytelling as far as a landscape scene can use it.
Leaving out part of the story amplifies the power and majesty it conveys.
