Artist story about Yellowstone sunsets and ‘Shining Through’:

The inspiration for this Yellowstone sunset painting actually came from another painting I did.

“Fiery Farewell,” won the 2007 Remington Award from the Prix de West Show at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

I liked the composition and feel of that painting so much, I thought I’d try a horizontal painting with a similar feel.

In some ways, I like this painting even better than the award-winner.

This kind of blazing sunset is common in Yellowstone where I harvested my reference material for this piece.

The late-summer smoky haze from wildfires gives a new atmospheric tint to the sun, which pours out red rays as it approaches the horizon.

That coupled with the frequent standing water found in Yellowstone make this a fantastic subject.
