Artist story about Hidden Falls and ‘What A Rush’:
Hidden Falls roars in the springtime as snow sloughs off the Teton peaks above Cascade Canyon. It was exactly this condition that my friend and client asked me to capture in this commission painting.
After committing, it took a couple of years to gather all the reference material I needed for the painting. Every time I hiked around Jenny Lake and up to the falls, the conditions proved inadequate. Lighting, mood, or other details always seemed off.
My friend visited from time to time to check the status of the painting. I had to tell him I hadn’t yet found all of the right material to paint the falls. Despite doing multiple studies and taking many photos.
His reply was always, “Two words: No rush.” He even went out to Hidden Falls on his own time to see if he could help me get the photos I needed.
His patience and the pounding water are what gave the painting the title, “What a Rush.” The painting has since been on the cover of Art of the West and featured in other magazines too. My friend’s patience finally paid off.
